The Matthes EcoLab has a new paper published in Forest Ecology & Management led by Fiona Jevon, a Ph.D. student from the Dartmouth EEES program who is co-advised by Jackie. Our work measured carbon in the litter, organic, and mineral layers of soil in areas with different silvicultural history in the Dartmouth College Second College Grant. We found higher levels of mineral-associated soil carbon in areas with a higher abundance of conifer tree species. Although spatial patterns were highly heterogeneous at small spatial scales, our work shows that species composition plays an important role in moderating the impact of forest management on soil carbon storage.
